Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple face the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
