The English and Wales Pitted Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the final, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups conclude according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both the English and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
