The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
